Garrick Huscared gearing up for Christmas

The festive season is a very special time in Stratford when the town takes on the delightful feeling of old world charm even more so than the rest of the year. Janey and I moved here just before Christmas last year and were treated to the towns charms. The smell of log fires actually drifts between the streets. I was told that its due to log fires that many of the building interiors survived. Something in the smoke preserved the timbers. (finished off the tennants though). In the full tradition… Continue

Ted de Stratford The House of Maynard (From 'HardTown Stories' by tds

The House of Maynard. The first dead body I ever saw belonged to Mrs Maynard. Belonged? That sounds stupid. The truth of the matter is that when I saw it, it didn’t belong to anyone - not me, not you and certainly not to Mrs Maynard. How could it? Mrs Maynard was dead and she had no further use for it so, it certainly didn’t belong to her. No, if it belonged to anyone then it had to be to the tall, thin, miserable man in the black suit. The man who had come to take her away. All these though… Continue

Ted de Stratford The Eye of the Beholder (From 'HardTown Stories' by tds)

The Eye of the Beholder. There was never any doubt in my mind, none at all. As far as I was concerned, Sheba Lee was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was a Goddess. She exhaled gold dust and whatever she touched she consecrated. Her natural odour made my nose twitch with delight for up to three days after she had passed and I could have made love to her shadow. I would have paid good money to have her hair woven into cloth and made into the best suit I ever had. She was the sun, the m… Continue
